Current Political Map

There are 14 countries in Southern Europe: Albania, Andorra,Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Macedonia. Spain is the largest country by land area with about 195,364 mi², however Italy has a higher population,about 59.83 million.

Compared to the current political map, the eastern borders of Southern Europe have changed a lot.
- Yugoslavia has broken up to form Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,Serbia, and Macedonia. There are various reasons for the country’s breakup, including the effect of WWII, the divisions of politics and religion, but mainly the division of ethnic groups.
